Biden’s Address at Morehouse College Graduation: A Reflection
The Topic: President Biden’s address at Morehouse College, a historically black institution.
It is inappropriate for colleges and universities to invite politicians like President Biden to give commencement speeches, as outlined in the article “Joe’s pomp & condescension,” by Adam B. Coleman on May 21.
If I were an African-American student at Morehouse College listening to Biden’s speech, I would feel offended by his insincere appeal for the black vote and his patronizing demeanor. Biden, known for benefiting from white privilege throughout his political career, is not the ideal choice for such an occasion.
Morehouse College could have chosen from a pool of successful, qualified, and engaging African-American speakers for their commencement address.

As a teacher at two New York colleges who has had students of color in my classes, I must say that many of them have been among my most focused and accomplished students in various settings. I am confident that these students would not appreciate being spoken to in the condescending manner that President Biden addressed the graduating seniors at Morehouse College.
While our nation and culture have moved past the narrative of “suffering minorities,” Biden and his team are attempting to perpetuate this demeaning trope.

President Biden’s commencement speech at Morehouse College is another instance of his misleading storytelling in an effort to garner re-election support.
It is puzzling that Biden, who has had control over the government for nearly four years, criticized the democracy he claims is broken and unfair in his speech to graduating seniors. His failure to address this issue during his time in office raises questions about his sincerity.

Biden used his Morehouse College address to highlight past mistreatment of African-Americans in an attempt to showcase his potential to better serve them if re-elected.
However, Biden failed to acknowledge the negative impact of his open-border policy, causing harm to Americans of all races through increased criminal activities. The graduating Morehouse students’ gesture of turning their backs on him demonstrates their intellect and independence from his narrative.

While some graduating students at Morehouse College protested by turning their backs on President Biden during his speech, their right to do so is acknowledged, though the manner of protest may not have been courteous.
It is unclear if these students benefited from Biden’s student debt-relief policy, but their demonstration was a valid form of expression.

In his commencement speech at Morehouse, Biden painted a bleak picture of America where a black man’s election as president seemed impossible, despite the fact that it has happened twice during his time as vice president. His negative portrayal of the country as president is disheartening and suggests voting for him may be detrimental to the nation.
