Biden’s most recent green initiative could lead to a devastating blow for the auto industry

President Biden unveiled new auto-emissions mandates this week that are not as strict as initially proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency, but will still cause significant challenges for automakers and consumers. The rules do not specify the number of all-electric and hybrid vehicles to produce, but rather impose carbon-emissions averages for all cars and trucks sold, essentially requiring two-thirds of all new vehicles to be electric or hybrid by 2032.

Despite efforts by companies like Ford and GM to lower prices on EVs (mostly Teslas) and hybrids, these types of vehicles accounted for only around 7% and 9% of car sales last year, respectively. Biden’s mandate aims for them to combine for 36% by 2027, which seems unrealistic given current consumer trends.

The shift towards electric vehicles will likely drive up prices for internal combustion vehicles, making it more cost-effective for consumers to keep their older cars on the road. Additionally, the majority of US electricity is still generated from carbon fuels, casting doubt on the feasibility of Biden’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The United Auto Workers’ support for Biden’s “green transition” has raised concerns among its members, as the push for electric vehicles is already impacting their jobs. Biden’s policies, if implemented, could lead to further job losses and economic challenges for average Americans.

As Biden continues to pursue his agenda, the impact on inflation and the economy remains a concern. If re-elected in November, his second term may bring further hardships for everyday citizens.
