Bill Maher discusses immigrant’s murder, homelessness, and other issues: Letters

Maher’s derision
Thank heavens for this politically incorrect Baby Boomer, Bill Maher (“Maher roasts Biden,” July 2).
He’s also somewhat humorous and humble, very rare qualities in the Hollywood Hills these weird, toxic days.

The Democratic establishment— after the panic-inducing first debate — clearly needs a Plan B to replace the 81-year-old Joe Biden.

President Biden offered himself only as a moderate “bridge” candidate before the 2020 election, remember? And 2024 is plainly a bridge too far, as all can now see after Biden left the debate stage in shambles.

Immigrant murder

I just read The Post’s story about the hard-working Pakistani immigrant who was murdered while working a night shift in Brooklyn as a livery-car driver (“Dream ends with gunfire,” July 2).

Naveed Afzal, 52, was working two jobs to help support his wife and four children back in Pakistan when he was shot in the face.

I don’t live in New York, but I would be willing to donate something toward a reward leading to the apprehension and arrest of the two people caught on video walking away from his car after the execution-style slaying.

I’m willing to bet that police would have an easier time making arrests if more rewards were offered for these types of opportunistic and ruthless street crimes.

Homeless irony

The Supreme Court has recently declared that states may punish homeless people for sleeping in the streets (“Court allows homeless fines,” June 29).

I wonder if they realize the irony of making this decision a few months before the 100th anniversary of Anatole France’s death in 1924. He is famous for having immortalized a statement on the inequality of established law that disproportionately favors the wealthy: “The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread.”

It calls to mind another famous quote, this one by Winston Churchill: “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

You’d think we’d learn.

Disabled pride

President Biden touting a pride flag banner on his X account on July 4 is ridiculous (“Won’t let pride go,” July 5).

But more than that, it seems that people who tout the pride flag have forgotten about another oppressed group of people — people with disabilities. Why do we not have Helen Keller Day or include people with disabilities in the contemporary Pride flag?

Many employable blind people are still unemployed in this country. Let us not forget the contributions people with disabilities make and made to this country and the world. So, if we celebrate Pride, let us include all oppressed people.

Tourist murder

I read about the tourists from New Zealand who were attacked at a mall in California and “unfortunately,” the woman died by being run over by one of the suspects (“Elderly tourist run over, killed by armed robbers who dragged her through California mall,” July 3).

I’d argue that an intentional murder by a criminal is much more than “unfortunate.”
