Colorado Court bars Trump from ballot in the upcoming presidential election
In a move that favors Donald Trump, four Democrats on Colorado’s Supreme Court have removed him from the state’s ballot in next year’s presidential primary.
It’s clearly absurd and likely to be overturned by the US Supreme Court, as it is based on legal reasoning that only makes sense to the very-online left.
The justices’ main point? Orange man bad.
No, they didn’t exactly say that out loud: They cited Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, disqualifying from office anyone who swore to uphold the Constitution and then “engaged in insurrection” — a clause written after the Civil War to block soldiers who’d broken their oaths to fight for the Confederacy.
Trump’s actions around the Jan. 6 Capitol riot “constituted overt, voluntary and direct participation” in an “insurrection,” the court ruled.
Without even a gesture at due process, when Trump was never even indicted for insurrection — let alone convicted.
Democracy and the rule of law be damned; the four judges plainly didn’t care.
This has inevitably led Republicans to suggest (rhetorically, at least) getting President Biden barred in other states, since the ruling holds no limiting principle: Anyone can be deemed an “insurrectionist” for actions the accuser sees as harmful to the country.
You don’t have to love Trump to see the dangers here: It’s an invitation to a different kind of civil war.
It has a real, tangible impact on the GOP primaries: Ever since Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s ridiculous indictment of the ex-prez earlier this year, Republican voters have been lining up behind Trump in response to Democrats’ blatantly partisan abuses of power to “get him.”
Perhaps this is the Dems’ intention: Ensure that Trump wins the GOP nomination, since Biden beat him once already.
But Joe’s cratering approval ratings, and the polls now showing Trump ahead, suggest that they’re going to re-elect him to the presidency if they keep this insanity up.
