Columbia students frustrated with anti-Israel protesters’ actions as unAmerican
Columbia University’s anti-Israel protesters were seen on Veterans Day, gathering in the school’s quad to counter-demonstrate and draw attention to themselves rather than honoring those who have served our nation. Some students are growing weary of their actions.
A student group called Columbia University Apartheid Divest claimed that November 11 was not Veterans Day, but Martyrs Day. They rejected the American holiday, citing their refusal to celebrate the American war machine’s actions and instead honoring those martyred by the Israel-US war machine.
Approximately 80 students on campus observed this newly invented Martyrs Day, sitting in solemn remembrance of Palestinians who have been killed in the conflict with Israel.
Some members of the Columbia community, like Air Force veteran Sam Nahins, are losing patience with the protesters and their disruptive activities on campus.
Columbia University responded by expressing gratitude for its veteran students and monitoring the situation to prevent disruptions to campus activities.
While there are valid tragedies in conflicts like the one in Palestine, using them to overshadow the day meant to honor American veterans is seen as disrespectful.
Columbia students who protested on Veterans Day were criticized for prioritizing their own cause over honoring those who have served and protected their rights.
Despite the benefits of Western civilization that Ivy League students enjoy, some have chosen to denigrate the very individuals who protect their rights.
