Democrats Reject Barack Obama’s Election Interference as His Influence Within the Struggling Party Fades
Barack Obama seems to have lost his influence and tarnished his brand.
There was a time when it was rumored that Joe Biden was merely serving as Obama’s third term, with his former boss manipulating him from his residence in DC’s upscale Kalorama neighborhood, located just two miles from the White House.
The belief was that Obama was the real leader of the Democratic Party and that his wife Michelle would be the ace in the hole to replace Biden and defeat Donald Trump in 2024.
However, none of this materialized, and judging by his dismal poll numbers, Obama’s prominence has significantly diminished.
In a recent CNN poll, Obama garnered just 4% support from Democrats when asked who best represents the party, falling behind Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Kamala Harris, and Bernie Sanders. Ouch.
If Obama truly was orchestrating Biden’s actions, he has a lot to explain given the precarious condition of the party.
In truth, the former president was so detached from politics that he didn’t even tune in to watch Biden’s abysmal debate performance last summer, which severely damaged his re-election prospects.
Attempts to Undermine Harris
A new book titled “Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House” by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes claims Obama “was alerted to the catastrophe by his phone… He kept his thoughts to himself that night, but his representatives didn’t extend Biden the same courtesy.”
While his former aides like David Axelrod and the “Pod Save America” team campaigned against Biden, Obama remained mute. However, the book suggests he was encouraging the party to oust Biden and hold a mini-primary to select a successor, explicitly not favoring Harris.
“The mini-primary was Obama’s strategy to undermine Harris,” the authors assert.
At one point, when Biden appeared to be hanging on to his candidacy, Obama reached out and demanded to know, “What is your path?”
The authors recount Biden thinking to himself in frustration, “What’s my path? What’s your f–king plan?”
No Drama Obama, who prefers to stay above the fray, ultimately delegated the dirty work to movie star George Clooney and party stalwart Nancy Pelosi, who didn’t favor her fellow San Franciscan Harris either.
“Pelosi’s primary concern had been about Harris,” the authors write. “She genuinely worried when people panicked on the night of the debate, saying, ‘Oh my God, it’s going to be her.’”
After receiving a pep talk from Obama, Pelosi appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and subtly criticized Biden, pretending the party was waiting for him to decide about withdrawing, even though he had firmly committed to staying in the race. She revived the insurrection Biden thought he had quelled.
Subsequently came the fatal strike from Clooney, who published an op-ed in The New York Times urging Biden to abandon his re-election campaign and allow the party to conduct a mini-primary.
“Clooney’s comments mirrored Obama’s thoughts so closely that the op-ed could have easily borne the former president’s name. Obama didn’t want to dirty his own hands — he couldn’t bear to leave bloody fingerprints on Biden’s political corpse — but he hoped others would handle the dirty work,” the authors state.
Although Obama might have succeeded in pushing Biden out, he erred in believing he could control the party he once led when it came to selecting a nominee for the 2024 presidential race.
“He left the Democratic Party significantly weaker than he found it,” remarked one party operative to the authors. “Obama effectively destroyed that s–t.”
Obama Outmaneuvered
Ultimately, Obama was outplayed by the very man he held in disdain. Biden announced his exit from the race on July 21, 2024, without a mention of Harris.
However, he quickly followed up moments later with a social media post endorsing his VP as the Democratic nominee.
Party figure Jim Clyburn, who had capitalized on the Black vote in South Carolina to secure Biden’s 2020 nomination, also outsmarted Obama by promptly endorsing Harris before he took a call from the former president urging him to support a mini-primary.
Adding to the embarrassment, Clooney was reportedly irate when “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski suggested that Obama had orchestrated the writing of the op-ed, implying he perhaps even ghostwrote it.
The two-time “Sexiest Man Alive” reportedly unleashed a torrent of obscenities at an MSNBC producer, as recounted in another recent book about the Biden campaign, “Uncharted.” “How the f–k could you let her link me with Barack Obama, saying he made me write the op-ed?” Clooney raged.
There was a time when Clooney may have been proud of his association with “The One.”
Now he seeks to separate himself, marking yet another indication of Obama’s declining influence.
In an effort to regain relevance, Obama has started giving speeches urging anti-Trumpers to “sacrifice a little bit” in their fight against the president.
What does he mean by that? Commit hara-kiri? Break the law? Serve jail time? Ruin their businesses? He hinted that “law firms facing threats… might need to consider losing some business.”
But whatever his actual message, it lacked substance, especially coming from an affluent individual with three or four luxury homes who has never had to make sacrifices.
If Democrats are searching for guidance to escape their slump, the last person they should turn to is Obama. After all, he helped pave the way for Trump — not once, but twice.
