Demonstrate bravery by maintaining cellphone prohibition in NYC schools

The city Department of Education’s decision to ban phones in schools was a commendable move, but unfortunately, Chancellor David Banks recently reversed this decision, stating that further study is needed before implementing the ban. This reversal will likely result in delays that will impact classroom environments negatively.

The reason cited for the reversal was a lockdown at Louis D. Brandeis High School on the Upper West Side following a false gun scare. Some parents were upset that they couldn’t reach their children immediately, but the school’s response to keep students safe was appropriate.

Allowing phones in schools poses numerous problems, such as distractions, disciplinary issues, mental health concerns, and increased bullying. Teachers overwhelmingly support banning phones in classrooms to maintain focus on education.

Many top schools in the country already enforce phone bans, and implementing the same in struggling schools is vital for creating a conducive learning environment.

Chancellor Banks should prioritize the majority of parents who support phone bans in schools rather than giving in to a small minority. It is essential to uphold the decision that benefits the educational well-being of students.
