Denmark ends COVID restrictions — when will the US open society?

Denmark is one of those countries that the American left loves to point to and say, “Why can’t we be more like them?” This week, for once, there should be bipartisan agreement to this sentiment.

The Scandinavian nation has announced COVID no longer poses a threat to society, and is ending nearly all of its restrictions.

The realization that the COVID emergency is over and life should get back to normal has dawned on much of Europe, but across parts of America, and right here in New York City, our feckless leaders can’t take yes for an answer. So, for God’s sake, What metric are they looking for to end this? Give us a number of deaths, cases, hospitalizations, infection fatality rate, anything, that means we can ease restrictions.

Increasingly, it appears that governors like Kathy Hochul and Gavin Newsom, who insist our children wear masks all day, while they gallivant about maskless, have no intention of ever letting this end. If they did they would be setting guidelines for easing restrictions, instead they plot out an endless quagmire of shifting events and possible variants.

What makes the position of the “restrictions forever” crowd utterly untenable is the research showing that our lockdowns never worked in the first place. A new Johns Hopkins study shows that our hysterical effort at shutting down society reduced COVID mortality by just 0.2%. 40 million thrust out of work, a third of small businesses ruined, education of kids ignored, overdoses skyrocketing, shelves empty, all for 0.2%. In today’s Gotham, attendance at Broadway shows is in the tank compared to pre-pandemic levels. Confusing, unenforced mask mandates still linger from the subway to the stadiums, and all while the rest of the world accepts that the Omicron variant and its less severe illness marked the end, not a new beginning, of the COVID crisis.

The facts of the matter are that cases have plummeted in New York City and those who are dying are unvaccinated people with comorbidities. It is not a pandemic of the general population anymore. Every single adult New Yorker can go get a vaccine as easily as they can get a bagel, and since we know that drastically reduces severe illness, then hooray, the COVID crisis is over.

Yet another crisis remains — that of power-hungry governors and mayors who insist upon wielding emergency powers they should have given up two years ago. The crisis is too many state legislatures and city councils that sit on their hands rather than restore political power to its rightful place with the people’s representatives. And this crisis will not end until our leaders tell us what the goals are and when we have met them.

Along every step of the way in COVID response New York’s leadership has selectively chosen information that only supports shutting things down. When then Governor Andrew Cuomo’s own tracing data showed restaurants only accounted for 1.4% of COVID spread in December of 2020, he closed indoor dining anyway.

New York City is ready to fully open, without mask mandates or other restrictions. There is no other solution to the cavalcade of bad trends it has suffered for two years. Empty streets promote crime and vagrancy by the mentally ill. Empty storefronts harm neighborhoods. Kids masked all day at school suffer educational and developmental setbacks. This entire parade of horribles and more all stem from the unwillingness of our leaders to call an end to the madness.

If our leaders won’t commit to when restrictions will finally be over, then there is every reason to believe they will never, ever, let life go back to normal.
