Eliminate Sanctuary City Protection for Repeat Offender Illegal Immigrants

Even though the millions of “asylum seekers” allowed into the US interior by Team Biden are theoretically on parole and subject to deportation if they commit more crimes, the NYPD continues to find itself repeatedly arresting them.

The most recent incident involves the arrest of five migrant shoplifters, at least two of whom had prior offenses, for attacking cops at a Target store last week. How were Yusneiby Machado and Brayan Freites not already in ICE custody?

The state’s no-bail law explains why they weren’t in jail, but New York City’s “sanctuary city” statute prohibits law enforcement from contacting Immigration and Customs Enforcement or handing over offenders directly.

Unfortunately, this pattern continues:

• Yorman Reveron, another suspect in the Times Square cop-assault case, had two open cases in Manhattan for assault and robbery prior to that incident.

Criminal migrants should not be able to exploit Gotham’s sanctuary laws while being released back onto the streets to commit more crimes.

ICE should not have to learn about these cases from the media in order to take action.

Mayor Adams recently expressed openness to revising the city’s sanctuary laws to allow the NYPD to cooperate with ICE in such cases, emphasizing that migrants accused of serious crimes should be held accountable and New Yorkers deserve to be safe.

It’s time for Mayor Adams to move from words to action. If he truly wants to change the sanctuary laws, he should push for a City Council vote and hold members accountable for their decisions.

If the council supports criminal migrant gangs like Tren de Aragua and MS-13, then a Charter Revision Commission should be created to put it to a public vote and give New Yorkers a say in changing the law to address migrant criminals.

New York should become a “city of yes” when it comes to deporting illegal migrant criminals. Mr. Mayor, let’s make this happen.
