End of Trump’s trial on hush money: Letters to the Editor

The Topic: Testimonies concluding in the hush money trial involving former President Donald Trump.

Alan Dershowitz deserves credit (“ ‘I’ witness to judge’s bias in closed court,” May 22).

Judge Juan Merchan’s obvious bias makes the trial reek of injustice and highlights a rigged system disguised as justice.

An appeals court should quickly overturn an expected guilty verdict against former President Donald Trump due to the evident bias displayed in the ongoing circus of a trial in the Manhattan courthouse.

This case illustrates a disturbing disregard and violation of our Constitution.
This whole saga of pursuing Trump is a clear portrayal of how the justice system can be manipulated with false accusations and unethical judges.

I concur with Dershowitz. The Trump trials hold significant importance, not only as a current event but also in shaping the upcoming presidential election and American democracy’s future.
Broadcasting such trials would provide the public with a transparent view of the proceedings and serve as a valuable educational tool. It could deter any misconduct from witnesses, lawyers, or judges.

In the end, Trump decided against testifying in his defense, possibly due to his reluctance or, more likely, upon advice from his legal team (“Officially, no Don testimony,” May 22).

He should have pondered the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.”

A leader, or one aspiring to be, must be ready and willing to defend himself as well as his nation. Otherwise, his silence reflects cowardice.

Despite his current silence, I anticipate a great deal of discussion following the verdict, which will undoubtedly be contentious and marked by the frequent use of the term “corrupt.”

The Post highlighted how judicial contributions violate ethical standards, yet Judge Merchan made donations to Democratic causes regardless (“Complaint vs. hush-$$ judge nixed,” May 17).

It seems the judiciary’s supposed higher standards have been thrown out the window.

Even more troubling, Judge Merchan donated to the “Biden for President” campaign and Stop Republicans fund — clearly showing his bias while overseeing the prosecution of Trump, whose cause he opposes.

Speaker Mike Johnson diminished the judicial system’s sanctity by attending court and using his position to denounce the case as a deceptive “sham” (“Why Trump loyalists, VP contenders are flocking to ‘hush money’ trial: ‘It’s about paying homage,’ ” May 14).

Representatives Byron Donalds of Florida, North Dakota’s Governor Doug Burgum — both potential vice presidential candidates — as well as former GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, all appeared at the trial in New York, wearing red ties symbolizing their allegiance to their leader.

As if that wasn’t enough absurdity, a group of House Republicans proposed awarding Trump the Congressional Gold Medal “in recognition of his exceptional leadership.”

It was a truly disheartening spectacle in contemporary American politics.

You elect jokers, you get a circus.

The House speaker, a significant figure in the presidential line of succession, turned the Republican Party against the federal and state legal institutions — the foundation of democracy — by supporting Trump in court.

Character is not merely important — it is paramount. Trump’s former chief of staff, General John Kelly, correctly stated that Donald Trump “is the most flawed person” he has ever known. Yet these individuals are bowing down to him.
