Even Joe Biden cannot tolerate Harris’ anger in hurricane argument
Have you ever witnessed a president publicly criticizing their own party’s candidate to succeed them less than a month before Election Day?
Despite his flaws, President Biden does have some virtues, including old-school instincts that have stayed with him throughout his long political career. One of these instincts is to avoid using a crisis, such as the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, as an opportunity to attack his opponents.
This aversion to politicizing crises has caused friction between Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Recently, it was reported that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis refused to take calls from Harris as he managed the state’s response to Hurricane Helene and prepared for Hurricane Milton.
Despite DeSantis claiming he was unaware of Harris’ attempts to reach him, Harris criticized him harshly, accusing him of playing political games during a time of crisis.
In response, DeSantis pointed out that Harris had never reached out during previous storm emergencies and accused her of politicizing a natural disaster.
When asked about the situation, Biden surprisingly defended DeSantis on two occasions, leaving Harris unsupported.
Biden praised DeSantis for his cooperation with the federal government and thanked him for his work during the crisis.
In another instance, when asked if DeSantis should take Harris’ calls, Biden mentioned that he had spoken to the governor and appreciated his cooperation, demonstrating his support for DeSantis.
This public humiliation could leave even someone as cynical as Harris reeling, especially since Biden, a Democratic president, sided with a Republican governor in a public dispute.
Whether Biden is seeking revenge for being removed from the Democratic ticket or there is tension between their camps, his support for DeSantis over Harris is striking.
It’s clear that Harris’ self-centered behavior and attempts to politicize a crisis have alienated even Biden, who still wants her to succeed him but cannot tolerate her actions.
Despite her attempts to portray herself as a consensus-builder, Harris’ actions demonstrate a different character, one that prioritizes her own political advantage over the needs of those affected by natural disasters.
Ultimately, Biden’s response, while not intended as a rebuke, highlights the unprofessional and self-serving behavior displayed by Harris in this situation.
