Governor Hochul and Jonathan Lippman refuse to address anti-Semitic sentiments at CUNY.
Gov. Hochul is either clueless about the root cause of Jew-hatred at CUNY or she is fully aware but lacks the courage to address it properly.
Ex-Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman’s new report on CUNY antisemitism hints at the lack of a serious approach from the government.
The title of the 139-page document, “Antisemitism and Discrimination at the City University of New York,” suggests a politically correct review that aims to address issues without causing any major disruptions.
Why include “and discrimination” in the title if the focus was solely on eliminating antisemitism?
This approach makes the report appear naive or even a deliberate attempt to downplay the severity of the issue.
Lippman acknowledges the significant problems at CUNY, but the focus on “policies and procedures” suggests minor adjustments that may not have a significant impact:
- Improve the school’s portal for complaints of antisemitism (and discrimination).
- Train diversity officers better to handle complaints. Seriously? Why are diversity officers needed at one of the most diverse university systems in the nation? Moreover, DEI ideology is inherently antisemitic, making it unreliable to trust these officials on this issue.
- Review CUNY’s hiring processes and provide training on “implicit bias.”
Instead of these marginal tweaks, why not consider firing blatant antisemites who propagate false information against Israel and Jews?
Or even better, avoid hiring them in the first place?
Last year, Students and Faculty for Equality at CUNY reported a deliberate campaign to limit the recruitment of Jewish students and employees at the school.
By March 2023, not a single one of the “80 campus president and senior leadership positions” was held by a Jew, according to the group.
According to group founder Prof. Jeffrey Lax, “CUNY seems hell-bent on replacing its Jews with antisemites.”
For instance, Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez hired Saly Abd Alla as CUNY’s top chief diversity officer. Abd Alla is a former director of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations in Minnesota and an advocate for the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement.
Lax criticizes the university for not understanding antisemitism and accuses its leaders of actively promoting and defending it.
Lippman’s review fails to address any of these issues and instead praises Rodríguez for his efforts against antisemitism, despite the lack of significant progress.
As mentioned in previous articles, DEI in higher education fuels antisemitism by portraying Jews as oppressors and colonizers while depicting Palestinians as victims.
To combat Jew-hatred at CUNY effectively, Gov. Hochul should initiate a comprehensive overhaul, starting with addressing the issues surrounding Rodríguez.
She should also consider banning DEI programs and professors who propagate its distorted ideology and ensure a politically balanced staff rather than one dominated by radical leftists.
However, this was not her primary objective, which is evident by her selection of the left-leaning ex-judge to produce a lukewarm review.
It is unfortunate that CUNY, once known for providing affordable education to New Yorkers, has now become a hub of antisemitism in a city with a significant Jewish population.
The cover-up by Hochul and Lippman is unlikely to bring about any substantial changes to the situation.
