How is Eric Adams supporting migrants with financial costs, in contrast to past migrations?
Mayor Adams is offering up to $5,000 for illegal migrants to leave city-funded shelter for permanent housing, which may actually encourage more to come to New York in the first place.
The Department of Homeless Services launched a pilot program in December granting cash to “asylum-seekers” to help cover the costs of moving out of city shelters and into permanent housing.
So far, 150 families have benefited from this program, and the city is considering expanding access to the funds.
The cash can cover security deposits, moving expenses, first and last month’s rent, and an additional $1,000 in gift cards.
The program evaluates each family on a “case-by-case” basis, and the city official could not provide a total spending estimate for the program.
This program adds to the already existing free services that illegal migrants receive, which include shelter, food, healthcare, education, and debit cards.
In just two years, the city has spent $5 billion on migrants, equal to the annual budget of the entire NYPD.
Traditionally, immigrants who came to America had to rely on themselves or their support network to survive, but now the city is financially incentivizing illegal migrants to come here.
New York citizens are unknowingly funding this program, while receiving little assistance themselves.
The primary responsibility for the migrant crisis lies with President Biden and Border Czar Kamala Harris, who have encouraged migrants to enter the country.
Despite this, Harris intends to continue and possibly expand this policy by pushing for a “bipartisan border security bill” that grants new rights to asylum seekers.
City Hall should not be offering financial rewards to border-jumpers and should work towards reducing the influx of migrants into New York.
It is essential to address the root cause of the issue rather than implement short-term solutions that exacerbate the problem.
