Joe Biden Leaves Behind No Lasting Legacy
Breaking News Alert: Joe Biden is set to resign, paving the way for Kamala Harris to become the first female president.
While this scenario hasn’t unfolded yet, it wouldn’t be surprising if the president makes such a bold move to salvage his tarnished legacy.
Biden has been employing various tactics to erase the negativity associated with his presidency, yet nothing seems to be effective.
Since the election, he has been working overtime to help the public forget his administration’s past four years.
This week marked a particularly cringe-worthy moment when he awarded esteemed civilian medals to individuals such as Liz Cheney, Hillary Clinton, George Soros, and several left-leaning celebrities.
The one unifying factor among them? Their support for him. Instead of medals, perhaps they should be receiving free mental health care.
In reality, Biden departs office in a state of total disgrace.
Beyond his catastrophic handling of the economy and immigration, he has politicized the Justice Department to target Donald Trump. He managed to cling to his role for four years, largely because the White House, with the help of a biased press, conducted an extensive cover-up of his alarming cognitive decline.
The debate disaster
This deception, which involved administration falsehoods and social-media censorship, held up until the June debate with Trump, where Biden faltered, stumbled, and appeared ghostly.
His evident unfitness for another four-year term led top Democrats and their backers to pull the plug on his candidacy.
His presidency may have concluded then, but that would have required making Harris president, which wasn’t seen as a wise choice.
Moreover, Biden would have resisted being ousted, potentially igniting a civil war within the party that would have favored Trump.
Ultimately, that was the outcome anyway when Harris performed poorly as the alternative candidate, leaving Biden and his media allies trying to perform the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig.
It’s an impossible task.
Such is the extent of the failures over the past four years.
Consider the pardon of his son Hunter, which came after he repeatedly vowed he wouldn’t do it. Biden granted his son immunity for a decade’s worth of crimes.
One possible explanation for the unusually broad scope of the pardon is that Hunter committed offenses unknown to prosecutors, some potentially implicating Biden himself.
Rather than clarifying this range, Biden chose silence and diverted attention to other offenders by commuting the sentences of 37 out of 40 federal death row inmates.
These are some of the nation’s most dangerous criminals—homicidal maniacs, including child killers.
Not a concern—Trump had promised to reinstate executions, so Biden used his commutation power as a showcase of moral superiority regarding the death penalty.
This is only one of many instances where he appears to be dismissing voter concerns.
His actions also include attempting to enforce a ban on drilling for oil and gas in federal waters off both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
After an election where Trump’s commitment to border security and deporting unlawful immigrants resonated, Biden altered visa programs to permit more foreign workers into the U.S.
Last-minute legislation
Biden also endorsed favorable protections for union workers at the Social Security Administration, clearly attempting to undermine Trump’s efforts to reduce federal expenditure.
Can someone remind me, who is truly a threat to democracy?
Additionally, Biden aims to hinder his successor’s energy strategies by drastically lowering emission thresholds and complicating the export of liquid natural gas by American firms.
As Jim Geraghty of National Review noted, Biden’s extensive efforts to hamstring Trump “make Bill Clinton’s staffers stealing all the Ws from the White House keyboards seem quaint.”
Political favors and expensive boondoggles appear to be at play as Biden hurriedly disperses billions for what The Wall Street Journal dubs “favored” environmental initiatives.
While promoting Harris by appealing to race and gender may be a superficial tactic, it would certainly earn Biden some applause from far-left historians who he aims to impress with his last moves.
Biden seeks to foster a positive narrative about his presidency and his long tenure in Washington.
It’s worth remembering that he began his presidency consulting a group of such historians, including Jon Meacham, who was writing speeches for Biden while simultaneously expressing admiration for him on MSNBC without disclosing this dual affiliation.
A significant takeaway from the March 2021 gathering at the White House was the shared belief that Biden had to “go big” and emulate the second coming of FDR.
This concept, rooted more in the collective disdain for Trump and his supporters than in any genuine national requirement, was misguided.
Household income was already on the rise, and the COVID-era economy’s recovery lacked the staggering adversity that faced Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933.
Yet, driven by vanity, Biden seized this notion and pushed through trillions in spending under the guise of a Green New Deal.
Unsurprisingly, much of this expenditure went to waste, escalated the national debt, and sparked the highest inflation rates seen in years.
A 2023 analysis by a Republican House committee, conducted a year after the Democrat-led Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, found it to be the opposite of what had been promised.
Nation under inflation
Inflation soared over 15%, with grocery prices experiencing a 20% hike and gas prices increasing by 62%.
The justifiable outcome was that, instead of the public acclaim Biden craved, he faced some of the lowest economic approval ratings of any modern president.
And many are now asking if he’ll be making a one-way trip back to Delaware.
A report claims he has expressed privately that he would have defeated Trump had he continued to run, highlighting his disconnect from reality.
Biden was on track for a significant defeat, likely larger than Trump’s landslide win over Harris.
Interestingly, Jimmy Carter’s passing provides additional context to Biden’s pursuit of a favorable legacy.
Both Democrats faced such dismal performances domestically and internationally that voters ousted them after a single term.
Nonetheless, some persistent Carter advocates, including Biden, are still seeking success amid the ruins.
Biden has remained one of the few recent presidents to stay close to Carter and to speak positively of his presidency.
Now, Biden’s public expressions during this time suggest that he is acutely aware of his own legacy as he manages Carter’s death.
He has organized an elaborate state funeral, complete with lying in state and a government shutdown for a national day of mourning.
When Biden delivers a eulogy for the former president on Thursday, don’t be surprised if his words subtly reflect his own hopes for how he will be remembered.
