Judges should overturn Colorado ruling, the resurgence of the oldest form of hate, and more analysis

The Supreme Court should “unanimously” overturn Colorado’s ruling booting Donald Trump from the ballot, insists law prof Samuel Moyn at The New York Times.

“I would love” if Trump had never been elected, but to bar him now “would be the wrong way to show him to the exits” — and “put democracy at more risk.”

What happened on Jan. 6 is “still too broadly contested”; no jury “assessed” what happened.

Plus, trying to disqualify him “could make him more popular than ever.”

Democrats’ efforts to “save” democracy won’t boost their popularity when it seems they’re “afraid of practicing it.”

Worst of all would be for the justices to “split on ideological lines,” making their decisions look like “political choices.” Best to “let the people decide.”

Media watch: Journos ‘Numb’ to Antisemitism

“American news media has gotten so used to antisemitic attacks across the United States” that they have “become numb to their existence,” observes The Jerusalem Post’s editorial board.

Between Oct. 7 and Dec. 7, the Anti-Defamation League recorded 2,031 antisemitic incidents, a “337% increase” year over year — yet “most of the coverage is on local news outlets.”

“We cannot allow a situation where only local news outlets and Jewish media cover these despicable, racist, violent acts.

The national American newspapers, news sites, and television stations” should understand that “a small yet successful minority is under attack.

If these media outlets are truly liberal and promote a stable and democratic America, they should take these threats a lot more seriously.”

Mideast desk: The New Oldest Hatred

“As the end of the year draws close, it’s clear the oldest hatred is back with a vengeance,” roars Jake Wallis Simons at Spiked.

“Supposedly impartial observers” in the media and elsewhere show a “willingness to believe the very worst” of the Jewish state — like that it’s committing genocide in its counterattack against Hamas after the Oct. 7 atrocities.

It’s the “same tropes” from classic antisemitism “trotted out time and again.

The Jews like killing Gentile children. The Jews are mendacious” and exaggerate “their grievances for political gain.”

But “the hatred of Jews is simply the most prominent expression of a hatred of Western liberal values, culture and life. That’s why it matters so much.”

“The struggle against this darkness has never been more urgent.”

Ex-Navy captain: Make Houthis Pay

Deterring attacks by Iranian-backed Houthis “requires the political will to impose a cost that far outweighs any gain” they could “hope to attain,” William J. Luti notes at The Wall Street Journal.

After the USS Samuel B. Roberts struck “an Iranian mine while escorting Kuwaiti oil tankers in the Persian Gulf” in 1988, President Ronald Reagan’s “retaliatory strike was swift and savage.”

“My crew and I manned up for the early launch from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise,” not realizing “the ensuing fight would become the largest naval and air battle since World War II.”

That, and other events, left Iran “exhausted.” Within a few months, “the Iran-Iraq War was over.”

Team Biden should remember that lesson — and that “Houthis can’t fire missiles and drones they no longer have.”

Liberal: Claudine Gay Needs To Resign

“I take no joy in saying this, but Harvard President Claudine Gay ought to resign,” concedes The Washington Post’s Ruth Marcus.

“The initial reports of plagiarism seemed small-bore,” but “the instances of problematic citation” in Gay’s work “have become too many to ignore” — and “go well beyond routine use of the same language.”

In “perhaps the most disturbing example,” Gay actually “plagiarized her acknowledgments” — “the easiest, and most fun part, of writing a book.”

“What does it say about a person who chooses to appropriate another’s language for this most personal task?”

Gay’s “track record is unbefitting the president of the country’s premier university. Remaining on the job would send a bad signal to students about the gravity of her conduct.”
