Kamala Harris’s attempts to appeal to younger voters is uncomfortable
To reach out to young voters, Kamala Harris made a cameo at the BET Awards that ended up being cringeworthy. She used outdated slang and a forced tone that wasn’t authentic.
The Biden administration has been trying various strategies to connect with young Americans, including inviting “Queer Eye” stars and TikTok influencers to the White House. However, using Harris to portray a cool and relatable image came off as pandering and embarrassing.
During the BET Awards, Harris appeared in a pre-recorded segment where she FaceTimed with host Taraji P. Henson about the upcoming election.
In response to Henson’s concerns, Harris emphasized the importance of the upcoming election. She mentioned threats to fundamental freedoms like voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, safety from gun violence, and reproductive rights.
Harris also referenced a Kendrick Lamar song during the conversation, which did not sit well with viewers. Some criticized her for trying too hard to relate to the black community.
Elon Musk even described the segment as cringeworthy. He later called out Harris for misrepresenting Trump’s stance on abortion.
While the campaign’s intention was to appeal to young and black voters, the segment failed to resonate with the audience.
A recent poll showed that Biden’s support among Black voters and young voters is waning. Concerns about candidate age and performance in debates are contributing to this decline.
Trotting out Harris for inauthentic appearances will not save the Biden-Harris campaign. Voters are looking for genuine solutions to their concerns, not token appearances at events like the BET Awards.
