Most Terrible Liverwurst
As a liverwurst enthusiast, I am deeply concerned that Boar’s Head is offering the employees of its closed Jarret facility jobs at its other plants or severance packages (“Listeria plant is Boar’s dead,” Sept. 23).
These are the same workers who were involved in the deaths and hospitalizations of people in 18 states. Federal inspectors had previously cited the plant for the abundance of flies, molds, blood puddles, and garbage.
These workers should be held accountable, as well as those at the USDA who allowed the facility to continue operating long before the contaminated meat was distributed.

Tensions with China
There is a growing concern that we may witness an escalation towards war between the People’s Republic of China and the Philippines — a situation that could potentially involve the United States (“Philippines condemns Chinese ‘floating barrier’ in South China Sea,” Sept. 24).
In recent months, Chinese Coast Guard vessels have been aggressively encountering Philippine vessels in the South China Sea, using water cannons and engaging in physical altercations.
These incidents of Chinese aggression towards the Philippines indicate a heightened risk of a broader conflict involving other nations, including the United States and its allies.
While China’s influence in the Asia-Pacific region and globally is undeniable, there is a possibility that the Philippines, rather than Taiwan, could become a focal point of conflict. The United States must be prepared for any potential escalation.

Doctor’s Misconduct
We should now refer to him as Dr. Jay “the hypocrite” Varma (“COVID czar shown the sexit,” Sept. 24).
This individual, despite being a doctor, appears to have significant personal issues. His actions during the pandemic were unforgivable. As our pandemic czar, he hosted sex parties and attended raves, which is unjustifiable. His medical license should be revoked.
New York City was a deserted place during the pandemic. The residents followed the guidelines set by our pandemic czar. However, Dr. Hypocrite chose to act differently. He should be ashamed of his actions.”

Subway Hazard
Perhaps fewer children would engage in “subway surfing” if we stopped glorifying this dangerous and deadly activity by framing it in a nostalgic manner, akin to a classic Beach Boys song (“ ‘How’d he walk out?’ ” Sept. 21).
Let’s call it what it truly is: subway suicide. By using this terminology, we may dissuade young individuals from finding it appealing.

Financial Strain of the MTA
The MTA is already facing a huge financial deficit of $17 billion and is now requesting an additional $65 billion (“MTA’s big ask official?” Sept. 26).
While the agency is essential for the tri-state area, there needs to be transparency regarding the allocation of this requested budget. It cannot be based on guesswork.
It would be beneficial to examine the well-managed and cost-effective transit systems in England and Japan. Perhaps appointing an independent “transportation czar” could help oversee such matters.
Until how much longer can New York taxpayers bear this burden before being compelled to leave?
