Letters to the Editor — March 31, 2023

The Issue: A poll showing the majority of Carl Heastie’s constituents disagree with him on major issues.

Kudos to The Post for exposing the hypocrisy of Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, a shadowy power-broker who shuns the limelight and avoids interviews (“Speaking up vs. Speaker Carl,” March 29).

He plays it so far under the radar that only 16% of Bronx voters were aware of his opinions on charter schools.

Based on the results of the McLaughlin poll, it is clear that he has been rejecting the wishes of his Bronx constituents on the important issues of bail reform, crime and charter-school expansion.

Heastie has become a pawn of the teachers union, willingly selling out the black and brown children in his district by blocking school choice that will lead to better educational outcomes and academic success.

Thanks for shining the light on this progressive phony who has failed to represent the best interests of the people of New York.

Anthony Scro

Whitestone

Good article about Heastie. Once again, an elected official has been going against the will of the people.

People want better education for the children and the need to feel safe in their communities. Heastie forgets he works for those people.

Billy Rath

Brick, NJ

It is truly amazing how Mayor Adams shamelessly praised Speaker Heastie. To say that he has served his constituents well is like President Biden saying there is no inflation.

Some 57% want changes to bail reform, and 68% want more charter schools. Heastie has not cared what voters want.

Heastie and state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins are king and queen in Albany. They know what’s good for you, whether you like it or not.

When will voters kick these bums out of office? They are not invincible. The people have the power at the voting booth.

Mike Lapinga

Staten Island

Is it a wonder that politicians like Heastie have their own agenda, instead of representing of the citizens he is supposed to work for? Not hardly.

It’s time to stop the nonsense: Vote these hypocrites out and bring back democracy.

Doc Ludemann

Bridgeport, Conn.

Thank you for calling out Heastie and his out-of-touch policies on crime. He and Stewart-Cousins have made a good portion of New York a danger zone.

However, they know that the voters in their districts will never elect a Republican, so they don’t have to worry about placating the rest of the state.

Ted Rallis

Mamaroneck

Why doesn’t Heastie heed the wishes of his constituents on charter schools? The answer is contained in the body of the article.

As a member of the progressive liberal complex, Heastie is more beholden to the teacher’s union than he is to the voters. The 30% of the district’s voters who have never heard of the speaker will mindlessly pull the lever marked “Democrat” at voting time. Stewart-Cousins wields more power than Gov. Hochul. Heastie is not about to cross swords with her. He knows which side his bread is buttered on.

Robert Mangi

Westbury

I must say I do not believe that the voters in the Heastie’s district in The Bronx are very intelligent.

The Post reported: “Only 47% of voters in Williamsbridge, Eastchester and Wakefield approve of the speaker’s performance.”

What is far more startling is “30% of the voters in that district have never even heard of Heastie — even though voters have chosen him to represent them for more than two decades.”

Sorry, but it appears you do not need a name, just a “Democrat” label, to be elected in that district. Pathetic.

Walter Becker

The Villages, Fla.

Heastie could continue endangering the community and denying children the best education, and almost half his district would sign up for more. Stunning.

Some people just never tire of self-inflicted wounds.
