The Issue: Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s attempt to host an event that calls the founding of Israel a “catastrophe.”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib planned to host an anti-Israel event marking the 75th anniversary of the so-called “catastrophe” resulting from the creation of the state of Israel (“Tlaib Capitol hate-fest,” May 9).
In truth, the “catastrophe” that occurred 75 years ago was the decision by the Palestinian leadership to reject any partition plan that would include a Jewish state.
This catastrophic decision has been reinforced multiple times by Palestinian leaders in the ensuing decades and has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians.
The absurd claim peddled by Tlaib and others that Israel is to blame for this “catastrophe” constitutes nothing less than a modern-day blood libel against the Jewish people.

It’s an interesting irony that Tlaib, a proud Palestinian-American who has led an effort to delegitimize the Jewish state, has in the past accused American Jews of having dual loyalties.
Considering her anti-Israel actions and statements, no one has a more disturbing dual loyalty than Tlaib.

Arab leaders began threatening violence even before the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine was approved in 1947.
In fact, nearly two-thirds of the Arabs who left Palestine in the 1940s fled before the main fighting had even started.
The true catastrophe of the Palestine refugees (so designated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency) is that Arab nations condemned them to refugee limbo.
Of the fewer than 700,000 Arabs who fled Palestine in the 1940s, no more than 30,000 are likely still alive.
Yet UNRWA has 6 million of their descendants on its rolls as the United Nations abets Arab leaders in their insistence that it is Israel’s responsibility to give the refugees the homes that they claim their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents lost.
Surely Arab countries, with vast land holdings and oil wealth, should have taken in the Arabs who’d fled Arab-initiated violence in Palestine.

When I read about ridiculous nonsense such as this, I’m reminded that even a village of idiots has a village idiot.
The blatant corruption, moral turpitude, bald-faced arrogance and stupidity we see, hear and read about in American politics each day is crushing the very soul of our nation, as it drives more and greater wedges between its people.
Happy birthday, Israel.

The Issue: The coronation of King Charles III on Saturday at Westminster Abbey in London.
It’s a disgrace how the American media elevated the crowning of King Charles to a major news item (“His majesty, King Charles III,” May 7).
The English empire ruthlessly colonized the world, exploited those it conquered and even caused mass starvation in India and Ireland.
It’s ridiculous to treat the monarchy with any respect.
The king has no real power, and the entire family is a farce and a joke.
King Charles’ mistress from when he was married to Princess Diana has now been elevated to queen. They have no shame.
Yes, it’s a news event, but it should be relegated to a single article buried deep within the paper.

The people love the king, and they love the monarchy.
We need to show love of our country like the English do.
It’s beautiful and patriotic.
