The Issue: Governor Hochul’s Decision to Halt Congestion Pricing
Governor Hochul’s last-minute decision to stop congestion pricing from taking effect in June has sparked controversy. Some believe that such significant issues that impact people’s daily lives should be put to a referendum for voter consideration, rather than being decided by a single authority (“Kill It Forever, Gov,” Editorial, June 6).
It is commendable that the governor reversed her stance, even if it was a sudden change. The opposition to congestion pricing mainly consisted of those who dislike cars and the MTA, which is criticized for its overspending and inability to address fare evasion.
One suggestion is to repurpose the cameras and license plate readers intended for congestion pricing to combat fare evasion on public transportation, which costs the MTA millions annually.

As a longtime yellow-cab driver, I am relieved that Governor Hochul decided against implementing congestion pricing, which could have further harmed the taxi industry.
If congestion pricing is permanently discarded, there must be a firm commitment to ensure it does not resurface in the future. It is also essential to reevaluate traffic flow to enhance efficiency and speed for all commuters.
All of this is achievable with political determination. Those like me, who are overburdened and eager for relief, welcome the end of this debacle, at least temporarily.
