Michael Cohen, Trump’s ex-lawyer, testifies against him: Correspondence

The Topic: Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s choice to have Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen testify.

In a last-ditch effort to try anything and see what works, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has called Michael Cohen to testify as his key witness (“What do we gotta pay?“, May 14).

If I was unfortunate enough to serve on the jury, I would take anything this convicted criminal says with a grain of salt. Cohen has faced challenges in his life and is now trying to persuade jurors that he is remotely credible.

Hopefully, the judge will be the true problem-solver and dismiss this chaotic trial before it reaches the jury.

While Cohen worked as former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney and “fixer,” he once indicated he would defend Trump at all costs.

Trump himself once claimed that he could commit a serious offense and still not lose support. I sincerely hope that Trump and Cohen do not accidentally cross paths on Fifth Avenue during a trial lunch break this week.

I find it amusing how legal experts and lawyers are debating whether Cohen’s testimony will benefit the prosecution.

In reality, the goal of the witness testimony and the entire trial is simply to keep Trump off the campaign trail.

Even though the jury is likely to find him guilty, many believe Trump would win on appeal if he decides to do so.

I can’t think of a more fitting description for Cohen than the one journalist Joseph Alsop used for former White House Counsel John Dean during the Watergate scandal: a “bottom-dwelling slug.”

If this case had been heard by an elected New York State Supreme Court judge, they likely would have dismissed this baseless political prosecution against Trump.

However, acting Supreme Court justices like Juan Merchan are political appointees susceptible to political influence. While Trump faces charges of fraud, it is Bragg and his political advisers who are the ones committing it.

The Topic: Inappropriate behavior by Dubliners on a new virtual “portal” connecting New York with Ireland.

You couldn’t make up some of the absurd decisions made by disconnected individuals (“Yuck of the Irish, May 13).

Placing a portal in New York showcasing dysfunction for the world to see and then being offended by Dubliners? That’s just ridiculous. What’s next? A portal from Times Square showing disturbing scenes? They should invest the money in something more worthwhile.

Ireland is facing significant challenges, particularly in homelessness and housing, for the past decade.

I am completely puzzled as to why our government thought it was a good idea to spend money on a portal connecting to New York while our country is struggling economically and socially. Was this cultural exchange meant to distract from our housing crisis, healthcare struggles, overwhelmed police force, and street crime in Dublin?

The disrespectful actions of a Dublin group toward New York and America will not be forgotten. The Irish Tourist Board is likely dealing with crisis management at the moment.
