Mexican cartels have shifted their focus from drug-trafficking to human-smuggling by sneaking migrants into the United States through underground tunnels. A report by USA Today reveals that one cartel alone is reportedly bringing in 1,000 migrants a month, highlighting the profitability of this illegal activity.
This troubling trend can be directly attributed to President Biden’s failed border policies.
The cartels now offer VIP “travel agency” packages that include passage through tunnels connecting Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. These packages come at a steep price ranging from $6,000 to $15,000, as reported by US and Mexican law-enforcement officials and migrants themselves.
According to one smuggler, Chinese migrants are paying up to $75,000 for their passage.
As a result, VIP smuggling now makes up 70% of the cartels’ criminal activities.
The consequences are dire: migrants are exploited, the cartels profit immensely, and Americans are burdened with more unvetted newcomers entering the country undetected.
President Biden’s promises during his 2020 campaign, such as halting deportations, providing protections for sanctuary cities, and undoing Trump administration border control measures, have fueled this migrant crisis.
Increased incentives from left-leaning programs offering free services have further accelerated the influx of migrants from not just Mexico and Central America, but also from countries as far as Africa, South America, and Asia.
The sheer volume of migrants has led the cartels to devise the VIP smuggling scheme to exploit desperate individuals seeking to enter the US.
The tunnel-service not only poses a security risk by allowing potential terrorists to enter the country unchecked, but also thrives due to corruption on the Mexican side.
