New York City Taxi Driver Opens Up About Issues with ‘Unfair’ Congestion Pricing

Seeking Fair Treatment

Inquiring about the life of an NYC cab driver, I spoke to a driver with years of experience.

Gene Telarico shared his thoughts, stating, “When rates increased, tips decreased. Passengers question the extra charges, but everyone is just trying to make a living. It’s understood that everyone in New York has some form of a side hustle.

“Uber takes 30% of the business, yet we believe yellow cabbies are better drivers who are better vetted. We possess an innate intuition and don’t rely heavily on GPS navigation tools. We maneuver through traffic skillfully.”

Despite facing forward, what insights can you gain from the back seat?

“After 10:30 PM, passengers leaving restaurants are typically more relaxed. Recently, I had a passenger who was in a bad mood, and despite the efforts to calm him down, he became hostile. This is just one example of the daily experiences we encounter.”

“Congestion pricing is viewed as a money grab that affects us unfairly. The additional charges result in more parked cars and increased traffic beyond 60th Street. Unfortunately, the funds collected do not benefit drivers like us. It’s just another hurdle for us to navigate through.”

Aside from gesturing at us in the rain, what poses the biggest challenge for drivers?

“Inclement weather and interactions with other cabbies can be challenging. Driving at night, dealing with windshield wipers, and enduring eyestrain from oncoming lights require focus and skill. It’s a demanding job that involves navigating through traffic while maintaining professionalism.”

Farewell to the Silver Screen

The closure of iconic movie theaters in Manhattan marks the end of an era. The nostalgia surrounding theaters like Lincoln Plaza, RKO Roxy, and Paramount is palpable.

Amidst these closures is Loew’s 72nd on the Upper East Side, a familiar haunt that holds special memories for many. It’s a sign of changing times in our beloved city.

As our city evolves, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss for the familiar establishments that have shaped our experiences.

Celebrity Sightings in the City

Today, my day is filled with New York City sightings. The NY Yankees frequented the Hudson Clearwater Restaurant in the Village, creating a buzz in the neighborhood.

Key players like Catcher Austin Wells, shortstop Anthony Volpe, and pitcher Gerrit Cole were spotted enjoying drinks together, highlighting the camaraderie among the team.

Amidst these sightings, celebrities like Reese Witherspoon and Bill Murray were also seen navigating the bustling streets of NYC.

As the city buzzes with activity, the charm and allure of celebrity sightings continue to captivate residents and visitors alike.

Political Commentary

Curtis Sliwa, during his late-night radio show, critiqued a recent column in the NY Post related to naming a Chelsea street corner after the band Kiss.

His remarks sparked contemplation and reflection on the role of opinion and influence in shaping public conversations and decisions.

Rumors circulate about Mrs. Biden’s candid remarks regarding Joe Biden’s attributes, adding a touch of humor to the political narrative.

Only in Washington — and New York, kids — only in Washington and New York.
