NY Times’ article on John Roberts sinks to new depths in the left’s battle against the Supreme Court

Amidst the ongoing left’s conflict with the Supreme Court, The New York Times recently targeted Chief Justice John Roberts, falsely accusing him of using his authority to influence rulings that favored Donald Trump in important Jan. 6-related cases.

Furthermore, the article was based partly on leaks of confidential court documents, raising concerns that court staff or even a justice themselves may be aiding the progressive attack on the institution.

The allegations made by Jodi Cantor and Adam Liptak from The Times claimed that Roberts assisted Trump in three cases:

• The first case, which involved Colorado’s attempt to prevent Trump from being on the ballot, resulted in a 9-0 decision, showing that Trump did not require any assistance as the issues were clear even to the liberal justices.
• The second case did not directly involve Trump but focused on whether prosecutors had improperly charged 250 Capitol rioters. The ruling ended in a 6-3 decision with Justices Brown Jackson and Barrett switching sides.

Cantor and Liptak emphasized an incident where Roberts initially assigned Justice Alito to write the majority opinion but later decided to do it himself. Yet, they acknowledged that the switch occurred after allegations that Alito should recuse himself.

The only decision that significantly benefited Trump was the ruling on presidential immunity. However, Roberts mostly aligned with the liberal justices in agreeing to take up Trump’s appeal immediately rather than waiting until October.

In a confidential February memo, Roberts made his stance on the issue clear, which was later discussed with the reporters by individuals from the court – a significant breach of high-court ethics.

These leaks are a serious violation of the court’s integrity and undermine its ability to function effectively.

This adds to previous incidents of politically motivated leaks, such as the draft Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Justice Sotomayor is suspected of leaking the memo, given her dissent in the prez-immunity case and her displeasure with Roberts passing on her compromise proposal.

Despite these controversies, there is a lack of ethics investigation into certain justices’ lucrative book deals.

This relentless campaign against the Supreme Court has eroded public trust in the institution, the only functional branch of the federal government.

The leaks to The Times suggest that the toxic environment is seeping into the high court itself.
