NYC Councilwoman Amanda Farías has unexpected change of heart on NYPD funding
“Where are the men calling this out?” questions City Council Majority Leader Amanda Farías, who retweeted a post from the council Women’s Caucus about the troubling “sucker-punch a woman in the face” TikTok trend and encourages victims to contact the NYPD.
This is the same NYPD that Farías (D-Bx.) has advocated to . . . defund, restrict, and downsize.
During her time as a council candidate, she emphasized the importance of “significantly reducing funding for police precincts” and promised to back “reducing the NYPD’s budget and working with the community to find real solutions and justice for New Yorkers.”
During her tenure, Farías has actively pursued an anti-law enforcement agenda, such as assisting in the override of Mayor Adams’ veto of the How Many Stops Act, which opposes the NYPD.
Yet now Amanda is turning to the police for help — suggesting “violence interrupters” or other “community solutions.”
Regarding the question of “Where are the men”: Farías previously expressed frustration over the lack of justice for Jordan Neely, a violent homeless man who was accidentally killed while Daniel Penny intervened to protect other commuters.
Penny still faces charges in that case, thanks to political pressure — a prosecution that is likely to cause other men to hesitate when witnessing a woman being attacked on the street or subway.
The Women’s Caucus rightly condemns the “alarming trend in violence against women.”
However, if Farías and her progressive colleagues truly wish to combat this trend, they should reconsider their actions that undermine law enforcement and empower criminals.
