President Biden Calls on Americans to Unite: Correspondence

The Issue: President Biden’s response to the assassination attempt against former President Trump.

President Biden campaigned as a “unifier,” but his actions have shown him to be one of the most divisive presidents in recent memory (“Joe’s unity plea to US,” July 15).

Fortunately, former President Donald Trump survived the assassination attempt, but the current administration can hardly be credited for that.

Biden’s history of negative comments about Trump makes his call for unity ring hollow. After four years of conflict and hostility, it may be too late to bridge the divide.

President Biden’s recent address was filled with empty words and missed opportunities. It was another disappointing moment where the president failed to make a meaningful impact.

Instead of just talking, he could have taken tangible action by ordering the attorney general to drop all lawsuits against Trump, symbolizing unity and reconciliation for the nation.

Such a gesture could have benefited the country as a whole and improved Biden’s standing. Unfortunately, he and his advisers missed the mark on that one.

President Biden promised to “bring down the temperature” when he first ran for office over four years ago.

However, upon taking office, he immediately began labeling half the population as “MAGA extremists.” His attempts at unity seem insincere and too little, too late.

President Biden recently spoke with Donald Trump over the phone following the assassination attempt. He described the conversation as “good,” indicating a positive shift from their previous interactions. It remains to be seen if they will shake hands at the next debate.

The Issue: The dismissal of Alec Baldwin’s manslaughter trial in New Mexico.

I have never been a fan of Alec Baldwin due to his entitled behavior and rough demeanor (“Alec off hook in shooting misfire,” July 13).

It appears that Baldwin’s careless actions led to the tragic death of a young woman. Some may argue that prison time should have been on the table.

Unfortunately, we often witness prosecutors compromising fair trials in their pursuit of convictions. This case seems to be another example of this troubling trend.

Kudos to the judge for dismissing the case with prejudice, ensuring Baldwin cannot be retried. In our justice system, everyone deserves a fair trial.

In her quest for Baldwin’s conviction, prosecutor Kari Morrissey not only failed to uphold the truth but also wasted New Mexico’s resources.

She should be held accountable for her actions.

As a former prosecutor, I applaud Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer’s brave decision to dismiss this high-profile case.

The criminal justice system is intended to safeguard defendants in exceptional circumstances, and it takes a courageous judge like Sommer to uphold these principles.
