The Chaotic Mayoral Race in New York City: Reader Letters

The Situation: The New York mayoral election, currently led by former Governor Cuomo with Zohran Mamdani in a close second.

The mayoral election in New York showcases the Democratic Party’s candidates, including the extremist antisemitic Zohran Mamdani and the sexual predator and COVID mismanager Andrew Cuomo (“Dems on track for a two-candidate race in NYC,” April 21).

Meanwhile, Mayor Adams displays signs of political growth as he transitions to the Independent Party. His main fault seems to have been his naivety in placing trust in his former Bed-Stuy associates for pivotal cabinet roles.

It appears he has learned from that flawed judgment. Adam’s leadership could be a positive change.

The eight-year tenure of the inept former Mayor Bill de Blasio, coinciding with Cuomo’s governorship, resulted in significant distress for the city.

Thankfully, de Blasio’s reign is over. Yet, like a whack-a-mole game, Cuomo has emerged once more, leading the race for the Democratic nomination.

Among a group of leftist candidates, Cuomo is the lesser evil. However, entrusting him with the mayoralty would likely perpetuate the same detrimental policies that have undermined New Yorkers’ quality of life.

Anyone considering a vote for Cuomo should take a moment for self-reflection. The Democrats continually elect these charlatans who commit egregious errors, from endangering seniors’ lives to appointing individuals who free cop-killers.

Why not give a Republican like Curtis Sliwa an opportunity?

He could significantly improve the living conditions in New York.

The decline of the Big Apple remains evident with the upcoming mayoral race and the alarming quality of the candidates.

Is it conceivable that real New Yorkers would actually vote for the radical Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani?

Mamdani aims to dismantle the very fabric of New York, yearning to create a “socialist paradise.” His antisemitic views alone should disqualify him from candidacy.

New Yorkers must unite and protect their city; reject Zohran Mamdani for mayor.

The Concern: Governor Hochul’s proposal to release thousands of inmates amid a correctional staffing crisis.

It’s hard to fathom, following our cities being ravaged by thugs and gang members due to Biden’s border decisions, that we are now confronted with another misstep from Governor Hochul (“Kat’s ‘get out of jail free’ proposal,” April 19).

She is considering releasing over 2,000 violent criminals due to a shortage of correction officers.

The salary of a correction officer pales in comparison to the societal costs of significantly increasing crime due to Hochul’s “get out of jail” initiative.

She and the New York City Council seem completely disconnected from reality.

This folly must be stopped.

Let me clarify: Governor Hochul fires 2,000 correction officers but now plans to release between 3,000 and 4,000 felons because of a staff shortage in prisons.

As our own Cindy Adams puts it, “Only in New York, kids, only in New York.”
