The FBI is once again interfering with freedom of speech on social media

The FBI is once again getting involved in social-media activities despite previous criticism. In response to a Department of Justice report on information sharing about foreign malign influence threats to U.S. elections, Associate Deputy Attorney General George D. Turner issued a memo stating that the FBI will resume regular meetings with social media companies to discuss potential threats involving their platforms.

The quarterly meetings started after the 2018 midterm election and ended in mid-2023, but now the DOJ wants to restart them in time for the 2024 election. The FBI will collaborate with social-media companies to control information and potentially influence the election outcome.

In the past, the FBI has been heavily involved in content moderation on social media platforms, flagging accounts and pressuring companies to respond to their demands. This interference raises concerns about the FBI’s agenda, which may include shifting the election away from Donald Trump.

During previous incidents, accounts and sites sharing information deemed as “anti-Ukraine narratives” were targeted, including those discussing Hunter Biden’s role at Burisma. The government’s accusations of foreign influence often lacked substantiation, leading to questionable censorship practices.

The attempt to dismiss reports related to Hunter Biden’s laptop in the 2020 election raised concerns about government censorship and manipulation of information. By pressuring social media platforms to withhold certain content, officials were essentially attempting to influence the election outcome.

It is concerning when government agencies exert influence over social media platforms to control information flow. The implications for free speech and democratic values are significant, as censorship and pressure to censor information that does not align with their agenda can have detrimental effects on public discourse.

Given the FBI’s past actions, there is suspicion that they may use their influence over social media companies to suppress speech that could benefit Donald Trump or harm Democrats. While Elon Musk’s stance on free speech with Twitter (now X) may resist such efforts, other left-leaning platforms are likely to cooperate.

It is important to remain vigilant and critical of information suppression by social media companies, especially when it affects news sources like The Post. Claims of “foreign disinfo” should be scrutinized, considering the potential for manipulation and censorship.
