Pandemic journal: Time To Show Fauci the Door

President Biden should “relieve Dr. Anthony Fauci of his duties” as the “public face of the American government’s response to Covid-19,” thunder National Review’s editors. “It’s past time for public-health policy to shift to acknowledging that Covid-19 is an endemic disease and, for the most part, a risk for individuals to manage. Fauci stands in the way of executing that shift and communicating it to the public.” He has undermined public trust, by (as he himself admits) misleading the nation. He’s tried to “manipulate public opinion,” which is “not the job of public health experts.” And his claim that he “represents the science” and his “admitted deceptions” are “incompatible with each other” — and “intolerably insolent to boot.” Fauci “must go.”

From the left: Attack of the Vax Aristocrats

Riffing off Jimmie Kimmel’s elaborate “Anti-Vax Barbie” gag and other elite assaults on the vax-resistant, TK News’ Matt Taibbi takes aim at “the spectacle of posh celebs sneering at hicks who won’t take the jab,” a “smartypants act” often rife with “outrageous errors,” such as CNN stars “blasting Joe Rogan for taking a drug ‘intended for livestock’ (Rogan’s human ivermectin dose was prescribed by a doctor).” This “shame campaign has been a catastrophe as public health strategy” but “effective as aristocratic misdirection, a way to keep the public’s eyes off the vault.” That is: “Without constant drumbeats about the treacherous stupidity of anti-vaxxers and ‘domestic terrorists,’ at whom would the bulk of Americans’ anger be directed now?”

From the right: Dems’ Humiliating Week

“Last week must stand as the single greatest one-week showcase of political miscalculation in modern American history,” declares Conrad Black for American Greatness. “The tactical plan was to attempt to observe the anniversary of the disturbances at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, in a manner so theatrical” that the “preposterous election-rigging measures before the Senate now would sweep through.” Tossing the label Jim Crow 2.0 on “Republican attempts to strengthen the verification and the authenticity of ballots in a number of states,” Democrats ignored the fact that such measures are popular.

Libertarian: Youngkin-Defiers Ignore Science

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin “declared an end to mask mandates in the state’s public schools,” letting parents “decide whether their children should wear masks” — but some “school districts vow to defy” the new gov, with “encouragement from White House press secretary Jen Psaki,” fumes Reason’s Robby Soave. Yet the “science isn’t actually on school districts’ side”: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research they cite has been thoroughly “debunked.” And “Omicron has managed to evade mitigation efforts almost entirely.” Fortunately, the variant is mild. “Healthy young people” have “little to fear, rare exceptions aside.” But no “faces are more concealed than young people’s,” with school mask mandates in place even in cities that have relaxed general mask mandates.

Conservative: What Now for the Prez?

Has any president “a year into his term” been “reduced to such impotence that his aides are impelled to whine to friendly media about the ‘disrespect’ shown him by a first-term senator?” asks The Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker of one Biden adviser’s whining about Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. Yet “such lèse-majesté is routine now in Democratic ranks. In the past month the president has been spurned by Ms. Sinema, rebuffed by Sen. Joe Manchin, and, perhaps most humiliating, snubbed by Stacey Abrams,” whose claiming fame is losing “the 2018 election for Georgia governor.” What to do? Quit “trying to build ever more improbable progressive utopias in the clouds on the vaporous platform of a 50-50 Senate,” and “start doing some of the things the American people would actually like to see him do.” Silver lining: His agenda’s failure means a “damaged country has avoided further unnecessary self-inflicted harm.”
