Trump may eliminate DOE, promote school choice, and enhance education efforts.
Former President Donald Trump pledged to eliminate the federal Department of Education and promote school choice during his recent campaign appearances. New polls indicate strong bipartisan support for this concept.
If Trump is re-elected, he could follow through on both promises. The Department of Education is considered unconstitutional and ineffective, having spent over a trillion dollars on K-12 education without significant improvement in student performance since its establishment in 1980.
Trump’s plan to close the Department of Education and allow states to manage their education systems could lead to more efficient use of funds and greater local control. Additionally, he supports the Educational Choice for Children Act, which would establish a nationwide school-choice program independent of federal regulation.
The bill would provide tax credits to donors supporting K-12 scholarship programs, allowing families to choose private education options. This approach has proven successful in states like Florida and could help enhance education outcomes nationwide. Despite potential opposition in the Democrat-controlled Senate, the bill has significant Republican support, making it a possibility if Republicans gain more control in upcoming elections.
Ultimately, embracing school choice and eliminating the Department of Education would empower states and families to make education decisions that best suit their needs.
