Trump should break away from Washington ‘norms’, but should adhere to constitutional standards
President-elect Donald Trump is considering challenging numerous “norms” in his second term, according to discussions within MAGA-world. While breaking some so-called norms may be necessary, there are also checks and balances that are essential based on the Constitution and historical lessons.
In his first term, Trump defied many fake norms such as withdrawing from the Paris climate accords, moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, and pressuring NATO allies to increase defense spending. He also took a tough stance on issues like border security with Mexico and sanctions on Iran. Despite some controversial decisions, he respected traditional boundaries, including court rulings that opposed his agenda.
On the other hand, President Biden and Barack Obama have been criticized for disregarding Supreme Court rulings and implementing policies without proper legal backing. While Democrats have weaponized government agencies against Trump, the correct approach is to appoint qualified individuals and address real violations, not target political opponents.
Proposals to use recess appointments for agency heads and eliminate the filibuster could backfire. Maintaining the filibuster is crucial for preventing hasty legislation and ensuring bipartisan support. Trump needs to focus on common-sense goals like improving the economy and immigration instead of attempting to expand presidential powers.
Americans expect Trump to make positive changes without overreaching his authority. By delivering on his promises and avoiding unnecessary power grabs, he has the potential to be remembered as a successful leader.
