Trump’s Alcatraz Proposal: Correspondence
The Topic: President Trump’s proposal to reopen Alcatraz for the “dregs of society.”
Can we agree that President Trump occasionally has whimsical ideas (“Trump: Let’s reopen Alcatraz,” May 5)?
Out of nowhere, he suggests revitalizing Alcatraz.
Could he have been inspired by the Clint Eastwood film “Escape from Alcatraz?”
What might he propose next?
The revival of chain gangs?
Or perhaps an interest in the infamous French penal colony of Devil’s Island?
I recommend revisiting the reasons why Alcatraz was shut down in 1963.
Updating this facility would require a vast sum to accommodate just 336 inmates.
Trump should allow it to function as the museum it currently is, maintained by the National Park Service.
While some may resonate with Trump’s proposals, this shouldn’t be among them.

Trump’s idea of reopening Alcatraz isn’t a dramatic dilemma.
It exemplifies how he seeks solutions to America’s challenges and encourages conversations for positive change.
Trump approaches issues boldly and is receptive to impactful solutions.

It’s evident that hardened criminals no longer fear arrest or prison.
Reopening Alcatraz could serve as a jarring reminder to the rapists, child molesters, and murderers in our country.

Like many others, I’ve toured Alcatraz and escaped.
That’s much simpler when you’re a visitor.
Trump envisions it as an operational prison.
We already have numerous secure facilities, and the construction and operation of prisons can be very lucrative.
This may simply be a distracting gimmick rather than a serious attempt to eliminate a fascinating tourist attraction.

If Alcatraz reopens, it should have a one-way entrance; a way in but no exit — unless a criminal is leaving in a coffin.

Trump believes he’s ingenious with his bizarre and embarrassing proposals.
Now he wants to resurrect Alcatraz prison.
What a farce.
Perhaps in the next election, we can choose a leader who is not irrational.

Trump proposes reopening Alcatraz.
Great, let’s proceed — with him as the first inmate admitted.

The Topic: City Council members’ initiative to eliminate the NYPD’s gang database, hindering ICE arrests.
It’s utterly irrational for these juvenile delinquents to be returned to society as minors (“Impunity for little terrors,” May 7).
We can expect them to reoffend against our citizens.
The progressive members of the City Council seeking to obstruct ICE from pursuing them are now attempting to pass legislation eliminating the NYPD’s gang database to further hinder effective policing.
It seems Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and her allies are siding with crime.
These City Council members must be held accountable.

The City Council’s move to abolish the NYPD’s gang database is a clear indication of how far-left Democrats
continue to prioritize delusional ideology over the stark reality that New York City is deteriorating.
The council needs to redirect its efforts towards improving the city, instead of resembling a group of reckless politicians.
