UFT loves charters, as long as Randi Weingarten is involved
Thank goodness we have deeply principled organizations like the United Federation of Teachers advocating tirelessly for our kids.
Wait, sorry: we meant fighting for the privileges of union fatcats.
Like the UFT’s former chief (now head of the national union), Randi Weingarten.
She co-founded charter University Prep Middle School, which got a unanimous “yes” vote from the city Panel for Educational Policy on the expansion of its colocated South Bronx space last week.
Charter growth is — theoretically — great news.
But it’s hilariously hypocritical that the UFT, which lobbied the PEP hard against other charter colocations and is even now pushing the Legislature to end them wholesale, is A-OK with this one.
Guess with a brave — and well-paid, at almost $450,000 for the 2021-2022 school year — fighter for equity-like Randi involved, all the (utterly phony) fears about charters’ supposed harm to regular public schools go out the window.
Weingarten, meanwhile, has been insisting that upping the number of charters in NYC is “unacceptable.”
At least that’s what she said on Twitter.
But hey, maybe the fact that charters consistently deliver better educational results for marginalized kids finally clued Randi and her underlings in.
Maybe they too are sick of how year after year after year regular public schools fail the students who need the most.

Maybe they . . . ah, who are we kidding?
It’s just business as usual for Randi and her cronies, using sleazy backroom deals to increase their own prestige and power and to heck with the kids’ best interests.
