US lacks strategy for Ukraine’s success

On April 24, President Biden signed a bill to provide Ukraine with $61 billion for its war against Russia, ending months of disagreement in Washington.

However, the funding did not include a plan to help Ukraine actually win the war.

It simply allowed Kyiv to purchase more “off the shelf” weapons and ammunition to stay in the fight, as stated by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

The goal of the US aid was to ensure Kyiv has assistance, but it would not be enough for Ukraine to achieve victory.

Recent events, such as Moscow’s renewed offensive towards Kharkiv and the appointment of new leadership at the Russian Ministry of Defense by Vladimir Putin, have raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to withstand the Russian assault.

The US aid package allows Ukraine to purchase new ATACMS munitions capable of striking targets up to 190 miles away. This could significantly impact Ukraine’s ability to strike back against Russian forces.

However, it remains uncertain whether these munitions will come with any restrictions, as was seen with the HIMARS rocket launchers previously sent to Ukraine.

The White House’s lack of confidence in Ukraine’s ability to win the war is evident in its past actions and statements from military officials.

US support for Ukraine has been more about weakening Russia than ensuring a Ukrainian victory.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the White House’s goal seems to be seeking a negotiated end to the war that does not lead to a direct confrontation with Russia.

Ukrainians, on the other hand, still believe in their ability to win and restore their country’s territorial integrity.

Recent statements from US officials indicate a focus on negotiation as the path to resolution, rather than a military victory for Ukraine.

This approach has raised concerns about Ukraine’s sovereignty and its potential inclusion in the NATO alliance.

As Russia continues to make incremental advances, Ukraine faces a difficult reality on the battlefield where outright victory may not have been Washington’s intention all along.

This situation is not only a tragedy for Ukrainians but for the entire world as well.
