Why are Democrats prioritizing the Great Lawn over rising crime rates in Central Park?
The Global Citizen Festival in New York, a concert to raise money for the worldwide poor, caused $620,000 in damage to Central Park’s Great Lawn last year, turning it into a messy and destructive affair.
City Councilwoman Gale Brewer is fed up and wants the event to be moved from the Great Lawn to a different location. State Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal agrees with her.
It is important to keep Central Park in prime condition as the city’s backyard and not allow it to be continually damaged by events like this star-studded festival.
However, it is concerning that the city is not showing the same level of concern about the significant increase in crime within the park. Robberies have increased by 222% compared to the same period in 2023, according to NYPD data.
Felony assaults have also doubled in the park. Yet, the proposed solution of giving young illegal immigrants something to do as a distraction from crime is problematic and may be seen as casual racism.
While the left expects New Yorkers to tolerate various forms of social decay, such as crime in the subway, there seems to be a selective outrage when it comes to issues like the destruction of Central Park’s lawn by concertgoers.
It is time to restore public order and address the broader issues affecting the city, rather than focusing solely on events like the Global Citizen Festival.
