Yay! Corrupt NYS politician loses public pension for stealing
Finally, a corrupt New York public official has been compelled to relinquish her taxpayer-funded pension after being convicted and sentenced to prison.
Ursula Stone, the village clerk of Steuben County, allegedly embezzled $1.2 million during her 19-year tenure. Under the state’s anti-corruption law, she has agreed to forfeit her $1,920 monthly pension. This marks the first forfeiture of its kind in New York’s history.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli declared, “This case should send a clear message that those who dishonor their public office will face serious consequences.”
Despite the support from voters to revoke pensions of convicted public officials, such forfeitures were not feasible until legislation was passed in 2011 and voters amended New York’s Constitution in 2018 to allow it.
Former US Attorney Preet Bharara advocated for pursuing pension benefits of corrupt elected officials and described it as a “galling injustice” for them to receive taxpayer-funded pensions for life. DiNapoli and his team deserve recognition for uncovering Stone’s long-term embezzlement.
However, it remains uncertain how many district attorneys will risk pursuing powerful politicians and who will take on the investigative duties. Despite the legal provisions for justice, New York’s political climate may continue to protect the most egregious offenders.
