Correcting Our Omega Ratios: Identifying Where We Went Astray and How to Restore Balance


Merely increasing omega-3 intake through supplementation to rebalance omega levels may not be adequate and could even be detrimental in certain cases.

Modern diets tend to heavily favor omega-6 fatty acids, which can lead to conditions like cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Achieving a healthier balance is crucial, but the question remains—should we focus on consuming more omega-3s or reducing omega-6s?

The journey to optimal health might not be about taking more supplements but rather about transforming our plates in a way that honors our ancestors.

Understanding Omega-6 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fats that our bodies cannot synthesize. Vital omega-3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while key omega-6 fatty acids are linoleic acid, dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid.

Omega-6 fatty acids, present in certain nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils like corn, soybean, sunflower, and safflower oil, are crucial for cell growth and immune response. On the other hand, omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, play essential roles in brain function, inflammation regulation, and heart health.

The Modern Diet: An Omega Imbalance

Ancient hunter-gatherers who lived past adolescence had a life expectancy of around 72 years, similar to modern populations, as reported in a 2018 article in World Obesity. Unlike contemporary societies, modern hunter-gatherers with diets resembling those of their ancestors do not face the same prevalence of chronic diseases, according to a 1988 article in Anthropological Commentary.

Our ancestors maintained a balanced omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio, estimated to be approximately 1 to 1, as mentioned in a 2002 article in Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy. In stark contrast, the typical Western diet today exhibits a disproportionate ratio of 20–50 to 1, according to a 2021 article in the Journal of Lipids.

This drastic shift is one of the most significant nutritional changes in human history and is linked to the increase in chronic health conditions like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.

The Consequence of Omega Imbalance

Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are broken down by the same enzymes, but their lipid mediators have contrasting effects—omega-6 derivatives generally promote inflammation and platelet aggregation, while omega-3 derivatives inhibit these processes and encourage vasodilation, as per the 2021 article.

While inflammation is essential for responding to injury and infection, chronic inflammation can contribute to various health issues. A 2002 review in Biomedical Pharmacotherapy highlighted that a high omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in the modern diet promotes inflammation, leading to diseases like heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune conditions, whereas a lower ratio suppresses disease progression.

Restoring a more balanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in our diets could be pivotal in addressing these health challenges and fostering overall well-being.

Why Are We Imbalanced in Omega-3 and Omega-6s?

The last century has seen technological advancements significantly increase omega-6 fatty acid prevalence in our food supply while decreasing omega-3s.

Dr. Chris Knobbe, a clinical associate professor emeritus at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, believes that excessive omega-6 fatty acid consumption, mainly from highly processed industrial seed oils, plays a significant role in modern diseases. He points out the historical absence of vegetable oils in diets until the modern era, noting a correlation between their introduction and the rise in chronic diseases.

Dr. Knobbe also highlights the shift in traditional sources of omega-3s, such as wild fish and animals, to more farmed alternatives rich in omega-6s due to their feed. The change in food production practices has contributed to the omega imbalance in modern diets.

Modern agricultural practices also heavily rely on livestock raised in confined feeding operations, fed diets high in omega-6 fatty acids, further exacerbating the omega imbalance in diets.

Proposed Solutions to Return to Omega Balance

1. Increase Omega-3 Consumption

One approach to rebalancing the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is to boost omega-3 fatty acid intake. Fish oil, a rich source of omega-3s, is commonly recommended as a dietary intervention to prevent cardiovascular disease. While studies on omega-3 fatty acids show mixed results, increasing omega-3 consumption can contribute to a more balanced ratio.

Research has suggested that achieving a dietary omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 2 to 1 through fish oil and dietary adjustments can lead to a reduction in cancer progression among prostate cancer patients.

However, it is crucial to note that simply increasing omega-3 intake through supplements may not be sufficient and could even pose risks, as evidenced by certain studies indicating potential harm.

2. Decrease Omega-6 Consumption

Reducing omega-6 intake offers multiple benefits in achieving a more harmonious omega balance. Consuming fewer omega-6s decreases the need for omega-3s and enhances the body’s ability to convert plant-based omega-3s into more beneficial long-chain omega-3s, a process often hindered by high omega-6 to omega-3 ratios in Western diets.

This more balanced approach of increasing omega-3 consumption and decreasing omega-6 intake through dietary modifications aligns with historical dietary practices and current research findings.

As our understanding of nutrition’s impact on health deepens, restoring the omega balance in a manner reminiscent of our ancestral diets could hold the key to addressing modern health challenges.
