Metformin: Beyond Treating Diabetes
Research suggests that metformin may have multiple uses, including promoting longevity, aiding in weight loss, and offering protection against cancer.
This latest study joins other research suggesting that metformin may have diverse benefits beyond diabetes, including promoting longevity, aiding in weight loss, and offering protection against neurological disorders, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. However, most of these potential uses are off-label, meaning that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the medication for these conditions.
Metformin and Macular Degeneration Subtype
Macular degeneration, a condition commonly associated with aging, affects the retina and leads to the loss of central vision. The primary types of AMD are wet AMD and dry AMD, with geographic atrophy (GA) being a subtype of dry AMD. GA can lead to legal blindness in 16 percent of those affected.
