Pentagon Logs Close to 300 UFO Sightings in the Past 8 Months

The Pentagon has received approximately 300 reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena or unidentified flying objects (UAPs or UFOs) within the past eight months, as disclosed in the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s Annual Report on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). These reports were delivered to Congress on Oct. 18. Between the dates of August 31, 2022 and April 30, 2023, there were 291 reports made to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), which investigates UFOs and other phenomena. Out of these reports, 274 occurred within the eight-month time period, while the remaining 17 took place from 2019-2022 but were not included in previous annual reports. As of April 30, 2023, AARO is currently reviewing over 800 cases. The majority of these alleged sightings appear to occur around military bases and restricted airspace, which the report attributes to “collection bias.” Military personnel are prominently reporting these alleged sightings. The report states that there have been no reports of adverse health effects associated with UAP sightings during the reporting period, but there are concerns about potential safety of flight issues and unusual performance characteristics exhibited by some reported UAP. The report emphasizes that while the presence of UAP in airspace carries a potential hazard to flight safety, there have been no reports of UAP maneuvering to unsafe proximity to aircraft or posing a direct threat to flight safety. The report notes that none of the UFO reports have been confirmed as being of foreign origin or attributed to foreign activities, but further investigation is ongoing. Officials believe that most of the sightings are likely due to “ordinary phenomena,” which may reduce the number of future UAP case submissions. The Pentagon is treating reports of incursions into designated spaces, land, sea, or airspaces seriously and thoroughly examining each one to ensure the safety and security of personnel, bases, and installations. The report aligns with findings from a NASA report in September that found no extraterrestrial origins for reported sightings; however, NASA has appointed a new director of research to continue studying the phenomenon. The report follows a congressional hearing on UAPs in July and claims made by former intelligence official David Grusch, who alleged the recovery of UFO vehicles and non-human “biologics” of the pilots by the U.S. government. The Pentagon has denied these claims and stated that there is no verifiable information to substantiate the existence of such programs regarding extraterrestrial materials.
