(Reuters) – On Wednesday, Amazon (AMZN.O) announced that it will exclusively stream 21 regular season games of the New York Yankees on its Prime Video platform for the upcoming 2025 season, amidst growing competition among streaming services for live sports broadcasting rights.
The games will be available for live streaming at no additional cost to Prime Video members residing in New York State, Connecticut, northern and central New Jersey, and northeastern Pennsylvania — regions that encompass a significant portion of the Yankees’ fanbase.
After decades of being a staple of cable television, live sports are rapidly transitioning to digital platforms to reach a broader audience as many viewers move away from traditional cable subscriptions in favor of streaming services.
Leading the charge, Netflix (NFLX.O) has ramped up its investments in live sports content, securing rights for notable events such as the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul boxing match to diversify its offerings and entice a wider audience.
This year, Netflix committed over $5 billion to acquire the exclusive streaming rights for World Wrestling Entertainment’s Raw in various regions and is reportedly considering a bid for the U.S. broadcast rights to Formula 1, as per media reports.
As a response, competing digital platforms like Prime Video are increasing their offerings of live sports to boost subscriber growth and enhance advertising revenue, since live events generally attract substantial and engaged viewership.
Currently, Prime Video also streams the NBA, Thursday Night Football, NASCAR, the Seattle Kraken, and Overtime Elite among others in the U.S.
