(Reuters) – OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has seen its weekly active users reach over 400 million as of February, according to a spokesperson’s statement to Reuters on Thursday, indicating a swift increase in the use of AI technology.

The startup, supported by Microsoft (MSFT.O), had recorded 300 million weekly active users as of December. Additionally, its number of paid business users has exceeded 2 million in February, more than doubling since their last update in September.

This rise in numbers follows the recent launch of an AI model by China’s DeepSeek, which claimed it could rival or even surpass Western competitors at a significantly lower cost, raising concerns about the United States’ leadership in the generative AI sector.

However, the growing demand for DeepSeek’s services has led to outages for the nascent startup.

Questions have also arisen concerning how DeepSeek managed to acquire Nvidia’s H800 chips, crucial for training AI models, despite the export ban from Washington to China.

OpenAI reported a twofold increase in developer traffic to its reasoning models over the past six months, alongside a fivefold increase for its o3 model since its late January launch.

This update on OpenAI’s weekly user statistics was first covered by CNBC earlier in the day.
