PARIS (Reuters) – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated on Tuesday that the nonprofit entity overseeing OpenAI is not for sale when asked about Elon Musk’s proposal to purchase it.
“I have no comments. It’s absurd,” Altman remarked during the AI summit in Paris.
“The organization is not up for sale. It’s just another one of his strategies to disrupt our operations,” he added in reference to Musk.
A consortium spearheaded by Musk announced on Monday it had put forth a $97.4 billion offer to acquire the nonprofit controlling OpenAI, intensifying the billionaire’s efforts to prevent the AI startup from evolving into a for-profit entity.
When questioned during his presentation at the AI summit about OpenAI’s potential sale, Altman reaffirmed, “no” and “we are not for sale.”
Musk co-founded OpenAI alongside Altman in 2015 as a nonprofit but departed prior to the company’s success. He launched the rival AI startup xAI in 2023.
