WASHINGTON (Reuters) – On Thursday, Tesla (TSLA.O) announced a recall affecting nearly all Cybertrucks in the United States due to an issue with an exterior panel that may come loose while driving, marking yet another recall for the pickup model.
The recall involves over 46,000 units manufactured between November 2023 and February 27 of this year, as detailed in a filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This situation could hinder Tesla’s progress, with the company’s stock having depreciated by nearly 50% this year amid increasing competition, an aging vehicle lineup, and public backlash against CEO Elon Musk’s controversial decisions regarding federal spending during the Trump administration.
The recall specifically addresses safety concerns regarding a stainless-steel exterior trim panel that might detach, posing a road hazard and increasing the likelihood of accidents. Tesla will replace the affected rail panel assembly with a new one that meets appropriate durability standards.
On February 21, the NHTSA informed Tesla of a report from a vehicle owner regarding a rail panel becoming detached.
According to Tesla, a loose rail panel could produce a noticeable noise inside the cabin, or customers might see the panel loosening or separating from the vehicle.
The company indicated that it is aware of 151 warranty claims potentially connected to this issue, but no incidents of collisions or injuries have been reported.
Although Tesla does not provide specific delivery numbers for Cybertrucks, the recalled vehicles likely constitute a significant portion of those currently on the road, according to analysts’ estimates.
Demand for the unique EV pickup showed signs of decline toward the end of the previous year following a series of delays.
Tesla’s shares fell 1.4% in premarket trading.
After initially climbing post-election due to Musk’s association with President Donald Trump, Tesla’s shares have now plunged nearly 42% this year.
Analysts note a shift in sentiment towards Tesla among existing customers and prospective buyers, as demonstrated by protests at Tesla retail locations nationwide and calls for sales boycotts emerging against the brand.
Tesla contributes significantly to vehicle recalls in the U.S. In 2024, the company led the recall tally with 5.1 million vehicles, as reported by recall management firm BizzyCar. However, many of the concerns related to Tesla vehicles were typically resolved through over-the-air software updates.
