A Former US Army Colonel’s Dedication to Supporting Veterans in Silicon Valley

After serving in the U.S. Army for almost 40 years, Retired Col. Ray Watts is dedicated to assisting fellow veterans. Watts shared his story on EpochTV’s “Bay Area Innovators” program, where he recounted how he allowed a homeless veteran to stay in his home for seven years until the veteran found permanent housing.

From a military family in Indiana, Watts joined the military at a young age and went through various training programs. He decided to go into aviation, eventually becoming a pilot who flew Chinook B models. Throughout his military career, he assumed different leadership roles and responsibilities, eventually deploying to Iraq with the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade in 2010.

During his deployment in Baghdad, Watts served as a liaison officer at the Al-Faw Palace and coordinated all rotary wing assets lifts for Congressional leaders visiting Iraq. He described the experience at the palace as surreal, given its history and opulence.

Upon retiring from the military, Watts continued to serve by finding innovative ways to improve the lives of veterans during their transition from military to civilian life. He is now the president of the Silicon Valley chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and remains a strong advocate for veterans.

Watts noticed that many veterans face challenges such as housing issues, food insecurity, mental health problems, and job insecurity. He works tirelessly to connect them with the right resources and support systems, ensuring they receive the benefits and assistance they deserve.

One of Watts’ notable achievements was collaborating with Santa Clara County Supervisor Otto Lee to transform a military transitional facility into permanent housing in November 2023. Through initiatives like All the Way Home, Watts and his church were able to provide housing for 1,600 veterans.

Watts emphasized the importance of supporting and recognizing the efforts of those who care for veterans, expressing gratitude for the patriots and individuals dedicated to helping veterans in need.
