Actor Terry Carter from Battlestar Galactica passes away | US News

US actor Terry Carter, known for his roles in 1970s TV shows like Battlestar Galactica and McCloud, has passed away at the age of 95.

Carter peacefully passed away at his New York home on Tuesday, as announced on his official website.

He was most recognized for portraying Colonel Tigh in the original Battlestar Galactica series and Sergeant Joe Broadhurst on McCloud.

Throughout his lengthy career, he broke down barriers, notably becoming one of the first black actors to have a regular role in a TV sitcom in 1956, playing Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show.

His Hollywood career took off with his role as Detective Max Jaffie in the 1970 hit Company Of Killers, followed by his success as Sergeant Joe Broadhurst in the US police drama series McCloud, which aired from 1970 to 1977.

One of his most renowned roles was as Colonel Tigh, second-in-command of the starship fleet in the original science-fiction series Battlestar Galactica in 1978.

The series capitalized on the success of Star Wars in 1977.

In 1989, he received an Emmy nomination for producing and directing a TV musical documentary titled A Duke Named Ellington, focusing on the life and work of the pianist, composer, and jazz star.

He also took part in three Broadway productions, starting with Mrs Patterson, then the revival of the musical Finian’s Rainbow, and his final appearance in the musical Kwamina, alongside British star Sally Ann Howes.

Carter is survived by his wife Etaferhu Zenebe-DeCoste, his two children Miguel and Melinda, and Mrs Zenebe-DeCoste’s daughter.
