Aimee Lou Wood Responds to ‘Cruel and Unhumorous’ SNL Joke | Entertainment & Arts News
Aimee Lou Wood, the star of The White Lotus, has labeled a sketch that mocked her teeth as “mean and unfunny”.
The 31-year-old British actress took to Instagram to share her thoughts on a joke featured on Saturday Night Live (SNL), where comedian Sarah Sherman impersonated her using exaggerated prosthetic teeth.
The skit, titled The White Potus, featured Donald Trump and his family portrayed as the Ratliff family from The White Lotus, addressing the backlash to the president’s newly introduced tariffs.
The third season of Mike White’s acclaimed hotel drama recently wrapped up on Sky Atlantic.
While other characters were depicted as real-life political figures, Wood, who portrays Chelsea in the series, was shown discussing a monkey.
Wood remarked that she was the only character subjected to “punching down.”
She also noted that a joke about fluoride, linked to discussions in the U.S. on whether it should be eliminated from tap water, missed the mark, as she has “big gap teeth, not bad teeth”.
Wood expressed, “Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s the nature of the show – but surely there’s a more clever, nuanced, and less cheap way?”
The Stockport-born actress also criticized Sherman’s attempt at a Mancunian accent.
However, Wood clarified that she wasn’t “hating” on Sherman personally, just “on the concept”.
Wood also highlighted a comment online that stated, “It was a sharp and funny skit until it abruptly veered into 1970s misogyny,” adding, “This sums up my view”.
After voicing her concerns, Wood mentioned she received “thousands of messages in agreement” and felt “glad I said something”.
Wood shared supportive messages she received.
One, from an anonymous supporter, mentioned having “a big gap” in her teeth and an “overbite” and that while she had contemplated “spending thousands to fix it,” seeing Wood look “gorgeous” on The White Lotus had led her to reconsider.
Wood revealed that SNL has since apologized to her.
Previously, during a guest appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Wood remarked that the positive response to her performance felt like “a real full-circle moment after being bullied for my teeth forever.”
NBC, the network that airs SNL, has been approached for comment.
