The Republican primaries for governor and U.S. Senate in Alabama on May 24 feature close races.

Democratic candidates rarely prevail, with Alabama’s most recent Democrat governor being elected in 1999. The last time Alabama chose a Democrat for the Senate was in a 2017 special election against a scandal-ridden Republican candidate.

Even after being accused of sexual assault and molesting a minor, Republican candidate Roy Moore lost only by 1.7 percent of the vote.

Currently, the two most contested Alabama races are for governor and for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Richard Shelby.

Although Republican Gov. Kay Ivey is an incumbent who has publicly supported former president Donald Trump, her chances of winning the primary are lower than might be expected, polls suggest.

Ivey leads in polls before the Republican primary, but she doesn’t have enough support among decided voters to reach 50 percent of the vote. Failing to reach that mark would trigger a run-off election, where Ivey would have to run against the second-most popular candidate.

At this point, Ivey’s likely run-off opponent is Tim James, an Alabama entrepreneur who opposes her increase in gas taxes and her support for creating casinos in the state.

However, undecided voters might give Ivey the edge she needs to avoid a run-off.

If the 42 percent of undecided voters who say they lean toward Ivey follow through, she will win the primary with enough votes to take the general election too.

The likely winner of the Alabama Democratic gubernatorial primary is Yolanda Flowers, a teacher and speech pathologist. But polls show too many Democrat voters are undecided to draw conclusions about the Democratic primary race.

In the GOP Senate primary, the three leading candidates are Republicans Katie Britt, Rep. Mo Brooks, and Michael Durant.

According to one recent poll, Britt leads the field with 32 percent support, Durant follows with 26 percent, and Brooks with 25 percent.

Another poll suggests that Britt leads on 30.8 percent support, Brooks follows with 28.5 percent, and Durant has 24.3 percent.

Although Brooks had a Trump endorsement, the former president withdrew it because Brooks asked voters to stop focusing on Trump’s 2020 election loss and start focusing on winning the next election.

Both Britt and Durant have tried to get Trump’s endorsement after Brooks lost it, but both have yet to receive it.

All three candidates have a strong chance of competing in a run-off election after the primary.

Currently, Will Boyd is the leading Democratic candidate in the Senate primary.

Only one Alabama House district doesn’t have an incumbent. In the Fifth Congressional District’s Republican primary, local politician Dale Strong leads in fundraising, followed by Casey Wardynski.

One of these two will likely run against Democratic primary leader Kathy Warner-Stanton.
