Alleged Assassin of UnitedHealthcare CEO Indicted on Federal Capital Charges
Luigi Mangione has been indicted on charges of stalking and murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a filing from the Southern District of New York.
The indictment specifies that Mangione is accused of stalking and murdering Thompson during an interstate travel event involving electronic communications and a firearm on December 4, 2024, the day Thompson was killed.
The initial count charges Mangione with stalking dictated by his travel across state lines.
A grand jury concluded that sufficient evidence supports the claim that Mangione “traveled across state lines via an interstate bus line for the purpose of stalking and killing Brian Thompson, and while in New York, [Mangione] stalked and subsequently shot and killed Thompson in the vicinity of West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan.”
The second count claims stalking through the use of interstate facilities.
The third count involves the accusation of murder utilizing a firearm.
Special findings in the indictment clarify that Mangione, 26, was an adult at the time of the crime.
It asserts that Mangione “intentionally and specifically engaged in an act of violence, fully aware that the act posed a significant risk of death … such that participation in the act indicated a reckless disregard for human life, resulting in the death of Brian Thompson.”
The fourth count pertains to Mangione’s use of a firearm during the commission of this crime.
The gravity of the offense is amplified by allegations that the firearm utilized was fitted with a silencer to muffle the sound of a gunshot.
“The murder of Brian Thompson—an innocent individual and father of two young children—was a calculated, premeditated act that has shaken the nation,” Bondi remarked on April 1. “Following thorough deliberation, I have instructed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty as we align with President Trump’s initiative to combat violent crime and enhance national safety.”
At the time of his passing, Thompson was in New York City for a scheduled conference with shareholders.
