Amazon to Release Melania Trump Documentary Directed by Brett Ratner

LOS ANGELES—Melania Trump, the upcoming First Lady, will be featured in a new documentary helmed by director Brett Ratner and set to be distributed via Amazon Prime Video. The tech giant’s streaming platform has secured exclusive licensing rights for both a theatrical and streaming release later this year, as announced by the company on Sunday.

Production on the documentary is already in progress, with the company stating that viewers can expect an “unprecedented behind-the-scenes look” at Melania Trump, along with a promise of a “truly unique story.”

The former and soon-to-be first lady published a self-titled memoir late last year. Her husband will officially take office on January 20.

This film marks another chapter in the connection between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Donald Trump. In December, the company revealed plans to contribute $1 million to the President-elect’s inauguration fund, and it also intends to stream Trump’s inauguration on its Prime Video service, valued at another $1 million in a separate in-kind donation.

Despite past tensions, Trump and Bezos appear to have softened their relationship. During his initial term, Trump often criticized Amazon and the political coverage from The Washington Post, which Bezos owns. Recently, however, Trump has adopted a more conciliatory stance as Amazon and other tech firms aim to enhance their rapport with the incoming administration.

In December, Bezos voiced anticipation regarding possible regulatory reductions in the coming years, expressing an “optimistic” outlook on Trump’s second term.

In October, Bezos refrained from allowing The Post to endorse a presidential candidate, a decision that resulted in a mass cancellation of subscriptions and protests from journalists with longstanding ties to the newspaper. Recently, a cartoonist resigned after her editorial sketch of the newspaper’s owner and other media figures bowing to the president-elect was rejected.

Executive produced by Argentine filmmaker Fernando Sulichin, the documentary began shooting in December.

Melania Trump has remained a somewhat mysterious figure since her husband announced his intention to run in the 2016 election. Throughout her tenure as First Lady, she has prioritized her privacy, focusing on raising their son, Barron, and championing her “Be Best” initiative, aimed at enhancing the “social, emotional, and physical health of children.”

While she made appearances at her husband’s 2024 campaign launch and attended the Republican National Convention’s closing night this summer, she has largely stayed off the campaign trail. However, the responsibilities of serving as First Lady again may lead to a more prominent public presence after Inauguration Day.
