American Detained in Russia Receives Additional 15-Year Sentencing for Espionage

MOSCOW—A U.S. citizen originally from Russia, who is already serving time in Russia for bribery, has been sentenced to an additional 15 years for espionage, according to reports from Russian news agencies on Tuesday.

In August 2023, a Moscow court filed espionage charges against Gene Spector, though specific details of the case have not been disclosed.

The U.S. State Department has acknowledged awareness of the sentencing involving a U.S. citizen in Russia and is keeping a close watch on the developments.

Spector, who previously held a position at a medical equipment company in Russia, was handed a 3.5-year prison sentence in September 2022 for facilitating bribes to an aide of former Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. This aide, Anastasia Alekseyeva, received a 12-year sentence in April for accepting bribes linked to two luxurious overseas trips.

Dvorkovich served as deputy prime minister from 2012 to 2018 under Dmitry Medvedev and is now the president of the international chess federation, FIDE.
